Love this tune.... so funky

The thing about Pat Martino's playing his swing. He swings soooo hard. Very few musicians of any stripe have his level of groove and swing. Jaco Pastorius had it. Herbie Hancock has it. There are others for sure, but when Martino's hands are in the guitar, the damn thing swings and sings like nothing else...

I don't think anybody plays this as Cal Massey intended. We tend to take Lee Morgan's word for it. The composer's version from his1961 record, Blues to Trane, is the real thing. Lee Morgan kind of cleaned it up. Nothing wrong with that, but these ARE soulful days.

Yeah he's a monster player alright. I've been trying to slow down his records on VLC player and even at 33% it's quick. I'd guess he does a lot of "casing" of key notes and chromaticism which account for his off sound at times.

The drummer is Carmen Intorre, Jr. Still PM's trio drummer. Yes, he's terrific. Organist may be his current one, Pat Branchi, but I can't see.
